Mac v Windows
My estimate is that Lightroom use on Mac now outnumbers Windows by 2:1.
This is based on visitor statistics to this site which show 51% Mac, 25% Windows. The balance of 20% iOS and 3% Android is impossible to split between Mac and Windows users, though I’d expect the ratio would be similar.
This 2:1 is very consistent with the trend which had been steadily climbing from 50% in 2012 to above 60% in mid 2013.
While these are only visitor statistics, I think they are representative of Lightroom users, After all, if you aren’t a Lightroom user, you’d be an idiot to visit this site!
That said, I don’t think such numbers are a basis for deciding which computer brand you should buy!
Hi John:
Since PHOTOSHOP products have always “favored” Apple (in that when they came out, there was Apple support first), I don’t find your statistics all that surprising.
I expect that in this particular application, Apple will always win, partly because they had a “head start” and partly because there are probably Windows users “out there” gullible enough to think that Apple holds some kind of “magic” over a Windows machine. (I’ve actually met someone in that group. The woman was told that Apple was somehow “better” than a Windows machine, and because she could afford it. she went out and bought an Apple machine–at considerable expense.
But I truly believe, at least from what I’ve seen, that either product will work as well on a Windows box as an Apple box. Personally, I’m not switching. I just see no reason to, not to mention that there’s software that I use that won’t run on an Apple.
And agree with you, Henry, that the figures reflect historical factors, a herd instinct and gullibility. A good computer is a good computer, and I’m perfectly happy to keep a foot in each camp, with a Windows desktop and a Mac laptop.
